Das Koreanische Kulturzentrum und die CJ Cultural Foundation präsentieren am Donnerstag, den 27. November, um 21 Uhr im Berliner b-flat Jazzclub das Konzert „Korea in Focus with CJ – Sori Quartet“. Diese Veranstaltung ist der zweite Teil der Reihe „Korea in Focus with CJ“, die aufstrebende koreanische Jazztalente der CJ Cultural Foundation einer internationalen Bühne vorstellt. Die Initiative bringt die nächste Generation von Jazzmusikerinnen und -musikern nach Berlin – eine Stadt, die für ihr reiches Jazz-Erbe und ihre lebendige Kulturszene bekannt ist.

Das Sori Quartet ist ein Fusion-Ensemble, das aus vier koreanischen Musikerinnen besteht, die in Amsterdam, Berlin, London und Stuttgart arbeiten und leben. Ihr Debütauftritt im November 2023 im Barbican Centre in London begeisterte das Publikum mit einer einzigartigen Mischung aus traditioneller koreanischer Musik und modernem Jazz. Im Jahr 2024 traten sie beim Akbank Jazz Festival in Istanbul auf und festigten ihren Ruf als musikalische Brücke zwischen Ost und West.

Das Wort „소리“ (Sori) bedeutet auf Koreanisch „Klang“ oder „Ton“ und umfasst ein breites Spektrum an akustischen Ausdrucksformen. In der traditionellen koreanischen Musik ist „Sori“ ein zentrales Element, das sich auf den Klangcharakter und die Ausdruckskraft der Melodie bezieht. Improvisation spielt sowohl im Jazz als auch in der koreanischen Musik eine entscheidende Rolle. Und das Sori Quartet kombiniert beides, um ein einzigartiges Klangspektrum zu schaffen, das zwischen Spannung und Sanftheit oszilliert. Ihr Repertoire umfasst Eigenkompositionen der Mitglieder sowie traditionelle koreanische Musik, die sie mit komplexen Harmonien und fließenden Melodien neu interpretieren.

The Korean Cultural Center and the CJ Cultural Foundation present “Korea in Focus with CJ – Sori Quartet” on Thursday, November 27, at 9 PM at Berlin’s b-flat Jazz Club. This performance is the second concert in the “Korea in Focus with CJ” series, which introduces next-generation jazz musicians discovered by the CJ Cultural Foundation to international audiences. As part of this initiative, the program brings these emerging musicians to Berlin—a city renowned for its rich jazz heritage and vibrant cultural energy.

The Sori Quartet is a fusion ensemble consisting of four Korean musicians who live and work in Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Stuttgart. Their debut performance in November 2023 at the Barbican Centre in London thrilled audiences with a unique blend of traditional Korean music and modern jazz. In 2024, they performed at the Akbank Jazz Festival in Istanbul, cementing their reputation as a musical bridge between East and West.

The word ‘소리’ (Sori) means ‘sound’ or ‘tone’ in Korean and encompasses a wide range of acoustic expressions. In traditional Korean music, ‘Sori’ is a central element that refers to the sound character and expressiveness of the melody. Improvisation plays a crucial role in both jazz and Korean music. The Sori Quartet combines the two to create a unique sound spectrum that oscillates between tension and gentleness. Their repertoire includes original compositions by the members as well as traditional Korean music, which they reinterpret with complex harmonies and flowing melodies.
